FENWAY DISTRICT. Folks come from miles around for the upbeat Euro and Top 40 music and dancing that make this hip club famous. Live concerts are provided on some nights, while other nights never fail to offer a variety of tunes with rhythm and a beat spun by the hands of expert DJs. Gay and lesbian nights are held on Sunday nights. Age restrictions may apply to some shows, call for details.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. Bell in Hand is reportedly the oldest tavern in the United States, although the long-lived pub has not always been at this location. In business since 1795, Bell now caters to a young, partying crowd. Live music is offered Tuesday to Saturday nights, and a jukebox provides entertainment when bands aren't in session. The bar's small menu of traditional pub eats is ideal if you arrive hungry. Picnic tables provide seating, and large windows facing the street afford great people-watching opportunities.

FENWAY DISTRICT. Bill's offers live music that's in the rock and funk genre. The interior is a veritable shrine to rock legends of the past. You'll find pictures of Jimmy Hendrix, John Lennon, and Janis Joplin adorning the walls. In fact, the bathrooms are quite a conversation piece here: the men's room is dedicated to the King and features pictures and memorabilia; meanwhile, the ladies room is a shrine to Marilyn Monroe. Most nights have a theme, ranging from rock night to reggae. It gets quite loud for such a small space, so be prepared to avoid conversation with your neighbor while the bands are doing their thing.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT. Ornamental artifacts and live Irish folk music set the scene at this downtown pub, and walls are decked with framed photos of Emerald Isle locations and people. Patrons enjoy hanging out at the large bar and ordering one of the many tap beers. A menu of American dishes and traditional Irish fare is available should you get hungry, and a big-screen television airs basketball, football and baseball games.

CAMBRIDGE. Lead performer Little Joe Cook keeps this lounge hopping while setting the pace with bluegrass and R&B favorites, like the house anthem, "Down at the Cantab." Monday nights are open mic night, and Wednesdays and Sundays are dedicated to blues. In addition, poetry readings are held downstairs in the Third Rail room. The lounge kitchen serves up tasty bar food ­ wings, fries, potato skins, burgers, and chicken.
